The data on the fauna and biotopic distribution of ants (Hymenoptera, Formicidae) in yew-boxwood grove Caucasian State Natural Biosphere Reserve are presented. A total 27 ant species were identified, belonging to 17 genera 4 subfamilies ( Dolichoderinae , Ponerinae Formicinae Myrmicinae ). – Lasius F. Temnothorax Mayr richest include 5 each. Habitat preferences of Strumigenys ants in western Japan (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

The ant tribe Dacetini contains more than 800 species (Bolton et al. 2006). Many dacetine ants are specialized predators on soil inhabiting arthropods such as Collembola, Acarina, and to some extent also Diplura (Brown and Wilson 1959; Masuko 1984, 2009ab; Wilson 1953). Due to their peculiar morphological characteristics related to this specialized predation, dacetine ants have attracted the in...

Myrmecophilous pygmephoroid mites (Acari: Pygmephoroidea) associated with Lasius flavus (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) in Russia.

Twenty four species of pygmephoroid mites (Acari: Pygmephoroidea: Neopygmephoridae, Scutacaridae, Microdispidae) are recorded from the ant Lasius flavus (Fabricius) or from its nests from Western Siberia and Crimea. Four of them of the genus Scutacarus Gros, 1845 (Acari: Scutacaridae), S. insolitus sp. nov., S. heterotrichus sp. nov., S. moseri sp. nov. and S. sibiriensis sp. nov. are described...

ECOLOGY AND POPULATION BIOLOGY Scale of Recruitment Limitation in the Western Harvester Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)

We examined the scale of recruitment limitation in the western harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis (Cresson). We measured colony density of 98 plots (0.25 ha) over an area of 500 ha. By applying an interpolation/extrapolation analysis to the spatial variability in colony density, we were able to accurately identify the location of two mating swarms. These two swarms were 1,400 m apart. Con...

Does Foraging Activity Affect Foraging Success in the Western Harvester Ant (Hymenoptera: Formicidae)?

Foraging behavior has been extensively studied in harvester ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae); however, there is little information about the determinants of foraging success. We developed a path analysis model to quantify the functional relationships among the components of foraging at the colony level (onset, duration, number of foragers) and foraging success. Variation in the onset of foraging ...
